Stefan Hornbach studied theatre studies in Munich, acting in Ludwigsburg and creative writing at the Literaturinstitut Leipzig. In 2015, he won the International Playwright Award Osnabrück for his play Über meine Leiche; this was followed by an invitation to the Autorentheatertage at the Deutsches Theater Berlin, translations into four languages and a radio play production by MDR. In 2016, he was awarded the Schiller Memorial Prize’s Encouragement Award.
His plays have been staged at venues including the Kasino at the Burgtheater in Vienna, the Schauspielhaus Bochum, the Düsseldorfer Schauspielhaus and the Oldenburg State Theatre. He has also written commissioned plays for the Badisches Staatstheater in Karlsruhe, the German National Theatre in Weimar and the National Theatre in Mannheim. In 2021, his debut novel Den Hund überleben was published by Hanser, for which he received the Jürgen Ponto Foundation’s Literature Prize.
