Daniel Chodowiecki (1726–1801) and Günter Grass (1927–2015) were both born on 16 October in Gdańsk. The fact that these two Akademie members share the same date and place of birth is a symbol that transcends media and national boundaries. To mark this double anniversary, the Akademie der Künste will award the Daniel Chodowiecki Prize for Polish and German Drawing and Graphic Design 2026, established by Günter Grass.

The generously endowed prize, which is being awarded for the first time in many years, will be presented in a new format during Chodowiecki’s anniversary year: a major prize for a Polish draughtsman/draughtswoman or graphic artist and two encouragement prizes for German draughtsmen/draughtswomen or graphic artists.

The prize dates back to the Daniel Chodowiecki Foundation, established by Günter Grass in 1992, and was set up by the author to promote German-Polish cultural relations and, in particular, artistic exchange between Polish and German visual artists.
